Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya, on the remote northwestern coast of Sri Lanka, is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting wingfoiling destinations in Asia. Combining reliable wind, warm water, huge flatwater lagoons and playful ocean swell, it offers conditions that suit everyone from complete beginners through to highly experienced riders.

What makes Kalpitiya particularly special is the sheer variety of riding environments packed into one relatively small area. In a single day, it is possible to ride perfectly flat shallow lagoons ideal for progression and freestyle, then move just a short distance away to small rolling waves and open ocean swell. The region is also famous for its long downwinders, remote sandbanks and quiet offshore islands, many of which are only accessible by boat.

The main wind season generally runs from May through to October, when strong and consistent southwest winds regularly create excellent conditions for wingfoiling. During this period, experienced riders can expect powerful wind, smaller wing sizes and long days on the water. A secondary season from December to March often brings slightly lighter but still reliable afternoon winds, making Kalpitiya a destination that works well across multiple parts of the year.

One of the reasons Kalpitiya is so well-suited to wingfoiling is the nature of its lagoons. Large areas of shallow, protected water create a forgiving environment where beginners can learn safely, and intermediate riders can progress quickly. The absence of heavy shorebreak and strong currents makes the learning process far less intimidating than in many ocean based destinations.

For more advanced riders, the area offers plenty of variety beyond the lagoons. Ocean swell, reef sections and open downwind routes provide opportunities for wave riding, carving and longer exploratory sessions. The conditions are generally playful rather than extreme, making the area enjoyable for a wide range of riding styles and abilities.

Beyond the wingfoiling itself, Kalpitiya retains a very authentic atmosphere. Unlike many heavily developed beach destinations, the region still feels relatively untouched. Fishing villages, coconut plantations, dirt roads and empty stretches of coastline dominate the landscape. The pace of life is relaxed, and much of the appeal comes from the feeling of escaping somewhere genuinely different.

Another major advantage of a wingfoiling holiday in Kalpitiya is the ability to combine it with wider travel experiences across Sri Lanka. The country offers an incredible mix of wildlife, culture and scenery, making it easy to combine time on the water with safaris, tea country, ancient temples, scenic train journeys and tropical beaches.

Days 6–8

Sigiriya

transfer to the Jetwing Vil Uyana near the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

After breakfast, climb UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock, a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. In the afternoon, visit Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka, also honoured by UNESCO.

Sigiriya Rock, part of Sri Lanka's famed Cultural Triangle, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historical, archaeological, and architectural significance. Often referred to as the "Lion Rock," Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress that rises nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. It was built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, who transformed it into a royal palace, citadel, and garden complex.

The site features a series of terraced gardens, water gardens, and boulder gardens, considered masterpieces of ancient landscape design. Midway up the rock, the Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect the king’s image, is adorned with ancient graffiti and poems left by visitors from centuries past. Nearby, the Sigiriya frescoes depict celestial maidens, or "Apsaras," painted with vibrant pigments that have endured for millennia.

At the summit of the rock, the ruins of the king’s palace offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Sigiriya is often viewed as the pinnacle of Sri Lankan engineering, blending art, urban planning, and natural beauty.

The broader Cultural Triangle includes nearby ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, as well as the Dambulla Cave Temples. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich history, culture, and Buddhist heritage. Sigiriya stands out as an iconic landmark, combining natural grandeur with human ingenuity.

Days 8–11

Kandy

4* Kandy House Bed and Breakfast

After breakfast you will head to Kandy via 1st century Dambulla rock temples. It's hard to know what to admire most, the complex of five painted caves, the giant rock Buddha that stands at the entrance, or the lines of devotees who come to place offerings in a haze of incense.

In the afternoon you'll continue to Matale where you'll visit a spice garden where you'll learn more about Sri Lanka's famed spice industry. From there you'll head to Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital. Staying at the Kandy House Hotel for a 3 night stay. From this spot you can head to Pinnawala Elephant orphanage (1.5hrs), Tea Plantations and Nuwara Eliya (3hrs). Heading to Colombo for your flight to Maldives at the end of this stay.
