Tour Highlights

This itinerary combines time in Langebaan with a shorter extension through the Western Cape, offering a well-balanced mix of world-class wind conditions and scenic touring. After your stay on the lagoon, where you can enjoy some of the best flat-water windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions on the planet, the trip continues with a relaxed journey through highlights of the Garden Route region, including coastal towns, forests and wildlife experiences. It is a particularly good option for those who want to experience a taste of what the Garden Route has to offer, without committing to a full, longer itinerary, making it an ideal add-on to a Langebaan-focused trip.

Days 1 - 6

4* Windtown Lagoon Hotel

Breakfast

This tour starts at Langebaan, the best Windsurf, Wingfoil and Kitesurf lagoon in the whole of South Africa. The drive from Cape Town airport is around 1.45 hours, depending on traffic. You can self-drive, or we can arrange a private transfer.

Langebaan

Langebaan lagoon, around 90 minutes drip from Cape Town airport in South Africa, is one the very best Wing Foiling locations in the world from October to March. The huge lagoon is surrounded by a beautiful nature reserve, and the wind reliably is about the best you can get on the Planet. Sometimes it can be too windy in the afternoons, so if you are a beginner, it is sometimes best to get out in the mornings. Planet Travel Holidays have offices in Cape Town, so we know this area really well. Outside world class Wing Foiling, we can offer a huge range of luxury tailor-made tours to bolt on to your Wing Foiling holiday in Langebaan.

Langebaan is a perfect place for beginners and improvers, but if you are looking for waves, it is easy to drive 1 hour South towards Cape Town, where there are lots of ridable waves for the more advanced.

Days 6 - 9

5* Cape Cadogan Boutique Hotel

Bed & Breakfast

Now for a 3-night stay in the 'Mother City' of Cape Town, staying at the stunning small luxury Cape Cadogan Hotel. Here we would recommend daily organised trips, including, as a minimum, a full-day Cape Point trip, Table Mountain (climb or via cable car), an afternoon at the V&A Waterfront, and a guided city tour (walking or by bike).

Cape Town

If you're in search of an adventure-packed Wing Foiling holiday, Cape Town is about as good as it gets. With consistently strong and reliable wind conditions, this South African destination is perfect for wing foilers, from flat water improvers to advanced wave riders. When most people think of Cape Town, they assume only big waves suitable for the advanced. What is little known is a brilliant flat water lagoon set just behind the main kitesurf beach, as well as Langebaan Lagoon, which is just 1 hour's drive away, both with perfect flat water conditions for beginners and improvers. This means that a wing-foiling holiday to Cape Town can be perfect for all levels and is especially good for mixed sport/level.

The summer months of November through March offer the best conditions, with wind speeds typically ranging from 20-40 knots. As if the ideal wind conditions weren't enough, the stunning coastline of Cape Town provides a picturesque backdrop for wing foiling. The beaches in the area offer excellent conditions for this sport and showcase the region's natural beauty.

And when you're not out on the water, there's still plenty to do in Cape Town and its surroundings. Whether you want to relax, explore, or be entertained, there are activities for everyone to enjoy – even for those who don't participate in water sports. A holiday in Cape Town promises an unforgettable blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and leisurely relaxation.

Where to Wing Foil in the Cape Town area?

Blouberg, also known as Blaawberg - a 20-minute drive north of Cape Town, famous as one of the world's top kitesurf holiday locations on the planet, but now becoming popular with Wing Foilers as well. You have the open sea with different sizes of waves (depending on the day), and then a butter flat water lagoon set just back from the main beach.

Big Bay - Just a short 10-minute drive further north is Big Bay, famous for glassy waves in a protected bay. This is also a great spot for non Wing Foiling partners and family with a beautiful beach area, grass embankment, and a number of super restaurants and cafes.

Langebaan Lagoon - 1 hour's drive even further north is the massive Langebaan Lagoon, one of the best flat water Wing Foil lagoons in the world. It is hard to find such a perfect spot for Wing Foiling. A huge expanse of flat water set in a stunning nature reserve. This is where we offer Wing Foiling lessons for beginners.

Days 9 - 11

5* Mont Rochelle Hotel Franschhoek

Bed & Breakfast

A leisurely drive north east to the world famous Winelands. Many of the wineries produce a wealth of world class wines that can be sampled along the way. Stellenbosch is the home of many fine wineries and gourmet restaurants.

A full day to explore the Winelands or perhaps take a guided tour around some of the popular estates or take a picnic and sit enjoying the African sun and amazing views. A visit to the university city of Stellenbosch is easily done with its oak lined streets and quaint shops.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are two of South Africa’s most renowned wine regions, each offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Stellenbosch, the country’s second-oldest town, is known for its Cape Dutch architecture, oak-lined streets, and prestigious university. It has a vibrant atmosphere with art galleries, fine dining, and world-class wineries. The town is surrounded by rolling vineyards and dramatic mountains, creating a picturesque setting that attracts both wine lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Franschhoek, meaning "French Corner," has a distinct European charm rooted in its Huguenot heritage. This small town is considered South Africa’s culinary capital, with award-winning restaurants and a strong focus on gourmet food paired with exceptional wines. The surrounding valley is breathtaking, with lush vineyards set against a backdrop of towering mountains. The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a popular attraction, offering a scenic and leisurely way to explore the region’s top wine estates.

Both Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer a perfect mix of history, luxury, and natural splendour, making them must-visit destinations for travellers exploring the Cape Winelands.

Days 11 - 13

4* Hermanus Marine Hotel

Bed & Breakfast

Another spectacular drive through the mountains and fruit-growing areas towards the coast before winding your way along the coastal road to the sleepy town of Hermanus. Built on a narrow strip of land between mountains and the sea, this charming town is a perfect stopover for the next 2 nights.

From here it is an easy 90-minute drive to Cape Town airport, or you can extend your trip further down the Garden Route.

Hermanus

Hermanus is one of South Africa’s most refined coastal escapes, making it an ideal 1–2 night stop within a luxury touring itinerary. It combines dramatic ocean scenery with a relaxed, upmarket seaside atmosphere, and is widely regarded as one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching.

The town sits on the edge of Walker Bay, where sheer cliffs drop straight into the ocean, creating a spectacular natural setting. A stay here is less about ticking off sights and more about slowing the pace, enjoying the views, and soaking up the coastal lifestyle.

For a short visit, the experience centres around the famous cliff path, which runs for several kilometres along the coastline directly above the sea. This is perfect for gentle walks, with constantly changing views and, in season from around June to November, frequent sightings of Southern Right whales just offshore.

The town itself has an unpretentious feel, with a good selection of independent boutiques, galleries and excellent restaurants. Dining is a highlight, particularly seafood, with many venues offering uninterrupted ocean views. It works very well for a relaxed afternoon followed by a long, unhurried dinner.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just inland, is one of South Africa’s top wine regions, known for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and offers a number of high-quality estates for tastings and lunch. Boat-based whale watching trips operate in season, and there are also options for kayaking, coastal drives and scenic flights.

Hermanus fits naturally into a Garden Route or Western Cape itinerary. The drive from Cape Town takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and is particularly scenic if you follow the coastal route via False Bay. From here, you can continue east towards the Garden Route, making it a seamless and highly rewarding stop.
