Tour Highlights

Between stays in the depths of the world’s largest rainforest and trips to ancient cities you’ll experience the very best of Peru. Start with its foodie capital where colourful colonial architecture combines with South American exuberance before a riverboat will bring you into the depths of Amazon Rainforest. Staying in a luxury lodge, night safaris, canopy walks and wildlife reserve treks will introduce you to the sheer biodiversity of this unique part of the world. Then, you’ll move onto the ancient sights of the Sacred Valley where Incan ruins tell the story of a lost civilisation. Prime among them is Machu Picchu, one of the world’s true wonders.

Days 1 - 3

5* Belmond Miraflores Park

Your tour starts in the Peruvian capital of Lima at a city centre hotel. Renowned for its gastronomy, Lima has long blended Peruvian flavours with international influences brought from all corners of the world by its migrant population. Perhaps explore the city lights and culinary extravagance on an optional Lima by Night tour.

Lima

Lima, the capital city of Peru, is a busy and lively city with a mix of old and new, where you can find colonial buildings, modern shopping areas, and a growing food scene. The city is large and can feel crowded, but it is full of culture, history, and interesting places to explore.

One of the main places to visit in Lima is the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can see the Plaza Mayor, which is the main square with the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, and old colonial buildings. Another great place is Miraflores, a modern and safe area by the sea. You can walk along the Malecón, a path with lovely ocean views, gardens, and parks. Nearby is Larcomar, a shopping centre built into a cliff with restaurants and views of the sunset. You should also visit Barranco, a colourful and artistic district known for its street art, old mansions, and relaxed cafes. For history lovers, the Museo Larco has amazing collections of ancient Peruvian pottery and gold. You can also see Huaca Pucllana, a large pre-Inca pyramid made of clay, right in the middle of the city.

Days 3 - 6

4* Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado where a 45-minute motorboat ride along the Madre de Dios River will bring you to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica. This collection of thatched, contemporary lodges is set deep in Amazonia; it’s the ideal launchpad to explore the region’s incredible range of flora and fauna. And, there’s not time to waste as – after lunch – you’ll make use of the reserve’s trail system to head into the jungle and gain an appreciation of the rainforest ecosystem up close. Later that night, a guided canoe ride will take you out in search of nocturnal birds and wildlife that prefer the evening cool before returning for an indulgent evening meal.

Peru Amazon

The Peruvian Amazon is a huge and beautiful rainforest that covers more than half of Peru. It is one of the most exciting places to visit in the country, full of wildlife, rivers, and green jungle. Visiting the Amazon is a real adventure where you can explore nature, see animals in the wild, and learn about native communities who live in the forest.

There are two main areas in the Peruvian Amazon where tourists usually go. One is near Puerto Maldonado, which is in the south, and the other is around Iquitos, which is in the north. Both areas offer jungle lodges where you can stay and take boat rides, guided walks, and night trips to see animals and plants.

From Puerto Maldonado, you can visit the Tambopata National Reserve and Madre de Dios River. This area is known for its easy access, comfortable lodges, and rich wildlife. You might see monkeys, parrots, macaws, giant otters, and even jaguars if you're lucky. Sandoval Lake is a popular place in this region where you can go canoeing and watch animals in their natural home.

Near Iquitos, which can only be reached by plane or boat, you can explore the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in the Amazon. It is full of pink river dolphins, sloths, turtles, and many types of birds and fish. You can also visit local villages and learn about life in the rainforest. Iquitos itself is a colourful city with markets and wooden houses on the river.

The best time to visit the Peruvian Amazon is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. There is less rain during this time, so walking trails are easier to use, and mosquitoes are fewer. The rivers are lower, which makes it easier to see animals near the riverbanks.

Days 6 - 8

5* Hotel Monasterio

As you leave the Amazon, a 45-minute motorised canoe ride will once again bring you back along the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado. Here, you’ll visits its famed butterfly gardens. Country-wide, Peru features over 3,700 varieties of this delicately beautiful insect, many of which can be spotted here.

A direct flight will then bring you to Cusco. Much more than a mere gateway to Machu Picchu, it hosts an Incan heritage all of its own while its verdant, mountain-lined valley makes for spectacular views.

Cusco and Sacred Valley

Cusco is a beautiful city in the mountains of southern Peru. It was once the capital of the Inca Empire and is now a popular place for tourists. The city is full of history, with narrow streets, old buildings, and a mix of Inca and Spanish culture. Walking around Cusco, you will see stone walls built by the Incas, colourful markets, and people wearing traditional clothes.

One of the main sights to visit is Machu Picchu, the famous Inca city on a mountain. You can get there by train or by walking the Inca Trail, which takes several days. In Cusco itself, you should visit Sacsayhuamán, an impressive Inca fortress with big stone blocks. The Plaza de Armas, the main square, is also a great place to relax and see churches like the Cathedral of Cusco. Another important place is Qorikancha, an old Inca temple that was turned into a church by the Spanish. You can also explore the Sacred Valley, which has beautiful villages, markets, and more Inca ruins.

The best time to visit Cusco is from May to September. During these months, the weather is dry and sunny, perfect for walking and sightseeing. June is especially good because of the Inti Raymi festival, an Inca celebration of the sun.
The not so good time to visit is from November to March, because this is the rainy season. It can rain a lot, especially in January and February, and some roads or hiking trails might be closed. However, there are fewer tourists during this time, so the city is quieter.

Days 8 - 10

5* Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel

Today, you’ll summit one of the true highlights of world travel – Machu Picchu. Begin with a winding train ride up to its craggy, carpeted mantelpiece before a bus takes you the last stretch. An expert will then guide you between its complex jumble of palaces, plazas, temples and residences that have puzzled scholars since its 1911 discovery. Its dramatic location supports theories that place it as everything from a military stronghold and palatial retreat to a ceremonial site and religious centre. Either way, its rock buildings blend seamlessly with its granite escarpments, making for postcard-perfect vistas at every turn.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the most famous places in South America. It is an old Inca city high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, near the town of Aguas Calientes. Many tourists visit it every year to see the incredible stone buildings and beautiful views. The city was built by the Incas in the 1400s and was later forgotten for many years until it was found again in 1911. Now it is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

When you visit Machu Picchu, the main sight is the whole lost city itself. You can walk among the stone houses, temples, and terraces built on the mountain. One special place is the Temple of the Sun, which the Incas used to honour the sun god. Another important spot is the Intihuatana stone, a carved rock that may have been used as a kind of sun clock. You can also see the Room of the Three Windows, which has a lovely view of the mountains. For those who enjoy walking, you can climb Huayna Picchu, the tall mountain behind Machu Picchu, or Machu Picchu Mountain, both offering amazing views from the top.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is from May to September, when the weather is dry and the skies are usually clear. This makes it easier to hike and take photos. June, July, and August are the busiest months, so it is a good idea to book your ticket early.

The not so good time to visit is from November to March, which is the rainy season. It often rains during these months, and the paths can be muddy and slippery. In February, the Inca Trail is usually closed for maintenance, so if you want to hike it, avoid that month.
